Cocktails of the Week: Labor Day Special
This is your weekly public service announcement: fantasy football is a game, and games are supposed to be FUN!
What is more fun than a few extra drinks--be it during the week as you prepare for Sundays or on Sundays during the marathon that is 10 hours of football. So, with that in mind, I plan to bring you a weekly series in which we highlight one beer, one wine, and one cocktail that fits with that week of football.
You see, when I am not at work or doing FF research/writing, I have a HUGE passion for creating craft cocktails and studying/collecting/drinking wine. You can follow my food/wine/beverage Twitter space @ChristopherB070.
So, I will work to design a trio of drinks that works well together, in the event you want to drink a little wine and a little booze on the same day, but that also pair well with the seasons/food of the year, the goings-on in football during that week, upcoming holidays, and just overall fun of the season. Who knows, I might even make football-related food suggestions for each drink recommendation. At its core, I hope this piece helps make everything about fantasy football that much more fun.
Enough talking...let’s start drinking.
Week 1 Theme: Go Hard or Go Home
It’s week one. We have waited 7-8 months for this day to arrive, so there is no reason to hold back now. Take a personal day on Monday; call in sick on Friday; do what you have to do because week one is time to go hard or go home. These three suggestions are favorites that will impress your guests and your bed-side bottle of ibuprofen (ya, because I am on the only one who has one of those…).
**Always remember, these drinks are listed in a suggested order of drinking in the event you plan on trying all three.
Wine of the Week: Sparkling Rose
In particular, we are big fans of the price to quality ratio of the 90 + Point Cellars current release. Made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes from Italy, this wine is light in color and abv (just 12%), so you can drink it all morning on Sunday before the games ever start. It is a beautiful way to awaken into the wildness of week one before moving onto something else.
Suggested food pairings: Ham/Egg/Cheese Breakfast Sandwich or with game time appetizers such as brown sugar and bacon-wrapped cocktail weenies.
Cocktail of the Week: Fresh-Squeezed Margarita
This is so much simpler than it seems and SO much better than even the best of the super sugary pre-made bottled mixers (and healthier). Here is what you need:
2-3 oz of clear tequila (depending on how crazy you want to get)
1-2 oz of triple sec (depending on sweet you want it to be)
½ of a lemon freshly squeezed
1 lime freshly squeezed
Mix all the ingredients in a shaker with ice, and shake hard for 20-30 seconds. Pour into a glass!
If you want it a touch sweeter, you can add ¼ house of simple syrup, but honestly, it doesn’t need it and remains a pretty darn healthy concoction without it.
Suggested food pairings: chips/salsa/guacamole or grilled chicken skewers.
Beer of the Week: Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy
As the weather begins to slowly turn to fall, let’s savor one last weekend of this summer treat. Plus, let’s be honest, you are either a big beer person, so you are going to have a bunch of these throughout the day on Sunday which well with these lighter flavors and manageable avb, or you will have already had some sparkling wine and a few margaritas, so this is a great way to finish out the day.
Suggested food pairings: pizza with spicy toppings (jalapeno, crushed red peppers, spicy Italian sausage) or buffalo wings
